Pipe Burst? What Should You Do?

One of the worst things that can happen to a homeowner is a burst pipe. It’s something that is quite rare, but it can happen. And the damage can be devastating.

If you walk into your home and realize a pipe has cracked, follow these steps only if it is safe to do so:

1. Turn off the electricity. should your pipeline burst. Do not, and I repeat, do not wade through standing water to do so. If you have to go into your basement to turn off your electricity, and there is standing water in the basement, it is an electrocution hazard. Call an electrician immediately if this is the case – or contact the power company.

2. Turn off the main water valve (normally located in your basement). This will turn off all of the water in the house – and most important – will shut off the water pouring from the tube.

3. If you pipe burst Contact a plumber. I repeat, contact a plumber!

4. Savage anything you can that is affected by the flood – pictures, memorabilia, etc.

5. Contact your insurance company.

6. Take photos of the burst pipe to document the damage. Your insurance company might want these.

7. More than likely, a plumber is now on their way. Be sure to stay safe, and stay outside if possible until they arrive.

Hopefully, this will never happen to you. Having a burst pipe is one of the worst things but it’s always better to have that little “heads up” before disastrous things like this can take place!
